VIC:Tradesman dies after van explosion

A Melbourne plumber died after his van exploded as he was leaving for work, blasting
debris 100 metres into nearby homes.

A leaking gas cylinder in the back of the 25-year-old's van is believed to have caused
the explosion but it's unclear what triggered it.

The blast blew the sides and roof off the van and threw the man about five metres,
with scraps of metal and glass sprayed in a 100-metre radius.

The man was leaving the Mulgrave home he shared with his parents at 6.45am (AEDT) when
the explosion occurred, but police say he was not in the van at the time.

He died about 10am in The Alfred hospital.

Detective Senior Constable Mick Cashman from the arson and explosives squad said he
was amazed no one else was killed.
