Vic: Shopkeeper fights back

MELBOURNE, Feb 1 AAP - A Melbourne shopkeeper foiled an attempted armed hold-up by
threatening his syringe wielding attacker with a chair, police said today.

A Noble Park store keeper in Melbourne's south was the victim of an attempted robbery
about 4.15pm (AEDT) yesterday when a woman entered his store armed with a syringe.

Police said the woman pointed the syringe at the man and demanded money.

The shopkeeper responded by picking up a seat from behind the counter.

The woman "decided discretion was the better part of valour" and fled, Senior Constable
Wayne Wilson said.

Detectives from the Embona taskforce - set up to address the increasing number of armed
hold ups in the area - arrested the woman after spotting her on the street a short time
later.

She will appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court today charged with attempted armed robbery.
