Fed: Qantas disruption worsened by govt's IR laws - Rudd

The opposition says today's disruption to Qantas services stems from federal governmentchanges to the industrial relations system.

But the government says a small group of unionists is holding the Australian travellingpublic to ransom because of Qantas' dominant market position.

Opposition foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD says the inconvenience of today's strikeby the Australian Services Union is partly due to Ansett Airlines being allowed to collapse.

Mr RUDD's told Channel Seven industrial relations is increasingly becoming the law of the jungle.

He says the powers of the independent umpire have been undermined and the parties areno longer required to negotiate in good faith.

Tourism and Small Business Minister JOE HOCKEY says there's no justification for astrike that's affecting tens of thousands of Australians.

The walk-out by up to 6,000 Qantas workers is over a long-running dispute over wagesand conditions.
