NSW: Govt pledges $500,000 to heritage listed synagogue

Australia's oldest mainland synagogue, Sydney's Great Synagogue, has received a $500,000
cash injection towards its restoration.

The New South Wales government has pledged the money for repairs to the heritage listed
building in Elizabeth Street.

The funding follows similar grants to St Mary's Catholic Cathedral and St Andrews Anglican
Cathedral.

The Great Synagogue was built in 1878 and the building's stonework, floors, gates and
carved timber around the ark are all in need of repairs.

The synagogue hopes to raise $3 million for the works.
